ISPO World Congress Gears up for Its Virtual Edition

    10/7/21 | 8:00 AM time

The International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO) World Congress will be held from 1 to 4 November 2021 focussing on “Digital Transformation in an Evolving World”. The virtual edition will be the leading event in the prosthetics, orthotics, and assistive technology sector worldwide this year. Professionals will share knowledge and experiences in keynotes, regional panels, symposia, and instructional courses, free paper and poster presentations, and exhibitor workshops as well as in the virtual exhibition and an international community area.

“With 320 presenters from 36 countries, the ISPO World Congress programme will provide a comprehensive display of the latest research and insights for prosthetics, orthotics, and assistive technology service providers with all presentations being recorded for participants to go back to at any time until October 2022”, highlights Edward Lemaire, World Congress Chair and President of ISPO. He further adds: “It is a true pleasure to be celebrating ISPO’s 50th anniversary by providing global access to state-of-the-art knowledge with our virtual event. Coming together in an online event also emphasizes the significance of the Congress motto Digital Transformation in an Evolving World as digital applications become regular parts of our daily lives and provide many benefits for the healthcare industry”.

    Renowned Experts and Aspiring Researchers

Special highlights of the virtual ISPO 18th World Congress are the three keynote lectures by Dr Alarcos Cieza, Dr Matthew Major, and Dr Alex Dickinson.

Dr Alarcos Cieza supervises work at the World Health Organization (WHO) in the fields of vision, hearing, disability, and rehabilitation in her role as Unit Head of Sensory Functions, Disability and Rehabilitation.

Dr Matthew Major will discuss a selection of novel experimental techniques being implemented to populate digital maps defining the relationships between select parameters in his keynote “Personalized Rehabilitation: Mapping the Links Between Prosthesis Parameters, Motor Capacity, and Clinical Outcomes for Optimizing Interventions”. Further, he will discuss how an iterative optimisation approach can deliver personalised lower-limb loss rehabilitation interventions when integrating targeted physical therapies that encourage self-organisation with the prosthesis.

In his talk “Digital Workflows for Predictive Prosthetic Socket Design”, Dr Alex Dickinson will describe how he and his team have tried to reframe prosthetic socket design in the paradigm of formal engineering design, whilst aiming to make simulation-based design tools usable and accessible to clinicians.

The popular IC2A Inspirational Lecture will kick off the virtual ISPO 18th World Congress and be delivered by Christopher Hutchison. He knows well that it is not easy being an amputee and that he has been “lucky” to have access to quality and reliable prosthetics, peer support, and other opportunities to improve his mobility. These have formed a foundation, allowing him to grow personally and move ahead in life. There remains the fact, however, that over 70 percent of amputees in the world remain without comfortable prosthetics. In his lecture “Prosthetics for All – Changing Lives through Digital Technologies”, Christopher will recognise that providing assistive technology to everyone is a challenge. However, the technologies, solutions, approaches, and funding are available to tackle this, allowing everyone to increase their individual impact, both professionally and personally.

Regional Panels Provide a Global Perspective

At the virtual edition of the ISPO 18th World Congress, a series of regional panels will offer the opportunity to discuss aspects of the congress theme “Digital Transformation in an Evolving World”. Each day will feature one panel with regional experts who will explore how digital transformation is affecting practice in different parts of the world, providing a global perspective on digital applications for assistive technology. Details on the regional panels are available online in the preliminary congress programme.

Virtual Industry Exhibition and Exhibitor Workshops

Diamond sponsor Ottobock, Gold sponsor Össur, Bronze sponsor HP, and other leading international companies will be showcasing their latest product highlights in assistive technology in the digital exhibition area. Most of the exhibitors will also host a workshop for attendees to get hands-on information.

Presentation Recordings Accessible until October 2022

Participants can log into the virtual platform from the comfort of their home or workplace and participate in the live event from 1 to 4 November. The programme will cater to different time zones to accommodate the international audience. However, as participants may not be able to attend all presentations live, the recordings of all scientific sessions and exhibitor workshops as well as the scientific posters will remain available in the virtual platform until 31 October 2022 for all event attendees to access at their leisure. The virtual exhibition area and international community area will be accessible during the live event as well as around the clock on demand until 30 November 2021.

    Continuous Professional Development Credits

The programme is accredited for one ISPO CPD credit per hour by the ISPO Continuous Professional Development Committee. After the event, participants will be able to retrieve a record so they can claim CPD credits with their national and international CPD certification or accreditation bodies. Delegates can only claim CPD credits for those hours actually spent in the virtual education activity.

Registration for the ISPO 18th World Congress

The ISPO 18th World Congress will take place from 1 to 4 November 2021 as a virtual event. Tickets are available online at www.ispo-congress.com/registration/.

    Mexico Planned for 2023

The ISPO 19th World Congress will be taking place in Guadalajara, Mexico, from 24 to 27 April 2023. The theme will be “The Art and the Science”.
