About Guadalajara

Location

Located in the centre of Western Mexico, 560 km or 350 miles west of Mexico City and 320 km or 200 miles east of Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara is the capital of the state of Jalisco. The city is approximately 1,500 meters, or about one mile, above sea level. The Guadalajara metropolitan area has a population of approximately 5 million people, making it the second-largest metropolitan area after Mexico City. It is consisting of five municipalities – Guadalajara Metropolitan, Tlajomulco, Tlaquepaque, Tonalá, and Zapopan.

Culture & History

Guadalajara is considered to be the cultural centre of Mexico. The region has given birth to some of Mexico’s most iconic traditions including mariachi music, tequila, and charrería. One can also admire significant colonial influences at the landmark Metropolitan Cathedral; Teatro Degollado, Mexico’s oldest opera house; and Hospicio Cabañas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

At the intersection of tradition and technology, Guadalajara displays both 16th century roots and 21st century leadership in innovation.

New York Times and Time Magazine ranked Guadalajara in their „Best of” lists

In the annual ranking, the New York Times presents the most beautiful travel destinations in the world. Guadalajara is ranked 21st among the most rewarding destinations for 2023. “Travel has always been a way to experience diversity,” the publication wrote. Special “antiturista” maps, including one for LGBTQIA+ travelers, provide a local’s perspective on places to see and stay in Guadalajara.

The New York Times' annual 52 Places to Go list is one of the highest profile “Best of” lists in the travel industry that provides huge inspiration to travelers.

TIME Magazine as well has chosen Guadalajara as one of the „ World’s Greatest Places of 2023 “. Mexico’s second largest city, between tradition and modernity, impresses with a rich culture, culinary delights and a lot of joie de vivre.

Guadalajara has a humid subtropical climate, featuring dry, warm winters and hot, wet summers. April is a dry month with average temperatures ranging from 14.0°C (57.2°F) during the night up to 31.5°C (88.7°F) during the day. This month is a great period to visit Guadalajara.
