Rebuilding Lives: A Multidisciplinary Approach to supporting children with amputations after sepsis

9:00 AM - 10:15 AM Tue, 17 Jun

Description

Children who suffer from sepsis that results in multi limb loss are a small and unique population within paediatric prosthetic rehabilitation. They present many challenges to the rehabilitation team over the years as they develop and grow from children to young adults

As clinicians our aim is to enable each child to be able to participate fully with their siblings and peers at each stage of their development. We believe this is best achieved through a team approach, which works to minimise the impact of the pathology and maximise the child’s ability through rehabilitation and considered prosthetic provision

During the course we will discuss the need for:

Early surgical /rehabilitation team collaboration

Consideration of amputation level and impact on rehabilitation

Rehabilitation principles and strategies for managing children

Prescription choice at different stages of development

Prosthetic challenges and solutions in multi limb loss

Minimising impact of complications for long term musculoskeletal health

Collaborative team working throughout childhood

Case studies will be used to demonstrate management of cases in everyday clinical practice

This course aims to provide clinicians with an opportunity to explore and exchange solutions for their paediatric patients with an experienced MDT

Statement of the objective / learning objectives

1. Understand the importance of collaborative MDT working throughout childhood.

2. Impact of level of amputation on rehabilitation outcome

3. Explore rehabilitation strategies and prosthetic prescription choices unique to multi limb loss children
