More than technology: How start-ups are shaping the I.S.P.O. World Congress 2025

Start-ups are setting new standards in orthopaedic treatment and care. At this year's I.S.P.O. World Congress, 25 young companies from 16 countries will present their ideas for future-oriented and sustainable treatment and rehabilitation. The start-up area will be the innovation hub of the congress.

More than 20 live pitches will offer direct insights into developments, products and visions – from AI-supported prosthetics and virtual reality training systems to individualised design and digital manufacturing processes.

Here is an overview of some of the start-ups represented:

• Aidplex (Greece): Develops ‘ScolioSense,’ an intelligent monitoring system for scoliosis therapies that records the wearing time of back orthoses, thereby improving therapy adherence.

• Anatomic Studios (Sweden): Combines aesthetics and function with customisable prosthetic covers in the style of fashion statements.

• Esper Bionics (USA): Multiple award winner for the world's first AI-based adaptive hand prosthesis.

• Instalimb (Japan): Uses 3D printing and machine learning to manufacture low-cost, customised prostheses to improve treatment in developing countries.

• Mecuris (Germany): Offers a digital platform for the customised design and manufacture of prostheses and orthoses, making the fitting process more efficient.

• Virtetic (Australia): Develops VR-based training methods for prosthesis wearers – realistic, adaptive and interactive.

This selection shows that the next generation of assistive technologies is international, interdisciplinary and full of ideas. The start-ups at the World Congress make it clear that modern treatment and care is much more than just technology.
